SYNLAB UK&I is part of the SYNLAB group, Europe’s leading medical diagnostic services provider. They provide laboratory, diagnostic and advisory services to a diverse range of sectors, including healthcare and wellness, sport, travel, insurance and family law. Within the UK&I they carry out over 45 million tests each year. These tests are completed either at one of their standalone laboratories, or at an NHS trust site through one of their many hospital partnerships, which include 5 major London hospitals.

Establishing a SYNLAB UK&I standard

Since 2010 SYNLAB has undergone significant change and growth, through the acquisition of other similar businesses and the forming of integrated pathology partnerships with various NHS trusts. As a result, the approach to managing occupational health and safety was fragmented, with each operating facility doing things slightly different. The organisation also had a very ambitious target of achieving ISO 45001:2018 certification by the end of 2026.

Group policies, audit plans and follow up support

Our team worked in consultation with SYNLAB health and safety to develop a comprehensive library of occupational health and safety policies and procedures, designed to establish a SYNLAB standard for OH&S management. Once implemented, these policies would be the driving force in the organisation achieving its objectives of a harmonized standard across the group and developing a management system that was capable of attaining ISO 45001:2018 certification.

In order to ensure that the new standards were being adopted at a site level, HSHE worked with the health and safety team to establish a 2-year audit plan covering 16 operating facilities. These audits would be completed by our consultants to assess how effective the new management system was being implemented and provide guidance where needed through a formal action plan.  

  • Organisation specific policies and procedures written with consultation and sign off by top management.
  • Framework for the OH&S management system put in place.
  • Audit program established.
  • Audits completed – ISO 45001:2018 gap analysis, action plan for improved legal compliance.
  • Collaborating with site General Managers, supporting them in managing H&S within their respective areas, including risk assessments and tailored advice.
  • Driving progress through the audit action plans.
  • Completion of key assessments – Fire risk assessment, machinery risk assessment and task risk assessment.

Now for the bit we enjoy!! Following the audits and action plans, our consultants worked with each site to provide guidance and tutelage. Assisting them with adopting the new standards and providing hands on support by completing key risk assessments, safe systems of work and staff training. During this process we were in regular contact with the health and safety lead, to communicate as actions were progressed and ultimately closed out. A real model for continuous improvement.
